CGS/BMHS Fencing Team
C.G.S. Fencing Team 2024-25 Season
The C.G.S. Fencing Team is open to 9th and 10th grade students enrolled at C.G.S. And B.M.H.S.
There is no experience necessary to try out for the team. Athletes with previous fencing experience will be given priority for a spot on the team. The team can accommodate 25 athletes based upon equipment and space requirements.
Pre-season training and tryouts for the 2024-25 season begin Friday November 1 at 2:30 pm in the C.G.S. Community Room. From November 1, meetings will take place every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:30 to 4:30 in the Community Room. The season ends in early March with the State Championship (date & location TBD).
Fencing is an expensive sport. The team has purchased protective clothing, masks, weapons, and electronic equipment for the use of the team. Athletes are welcome to borrow this equipment. That said, we encourage athletes to acquire their own weapons and equipment over time if they are serious about the sport.
During the season, the team pays for professional coaching provided by Candlewood Fencing Center in Norwalk. Athletes are expected to attend these practices.
The maintenance of equipment and cost of professional coaching is very expensive. Each year, the team runs a few different types of fundraisers to cover the costs of maintaining gear and paying for coaching. Athletes are expected to participate in fundraising.
History of CGS Fencing
The C.G.S. Fencing Team began as a humble school club during the 2019-2020 school year. We started with half a dozen students and some borrowed epee equipment. Since then, we have added the other two weapons and electronic scoring equipment. We have grown in number and ability and our athletes have won a number of impressive awards!
About the Sport of Fencing
Fencing is an Olympic sport that is enjoyed by athletes all over the world. Epee, foil, and saber are the three weapons used in the sport of Fencing. There are different rules and a different valid target area for each weapon. Fencing is excellent for honing concentration, precision, confidence, tactics, speed, flexibility, balance, dedication, and the ability to win and lose gracefully. While it may seem counterintuitive (you are stabbing one another, after all) fencing is an incredibly safe sport. Fencers are far less prone to injury than athletes who play baseball, soccer, wrestling, or volleyball
